Buying a Gun Online for the First Time: What to Expect from Checkout to Pickup

October 13, 2026

Buying a firearm online feels unfamiliar the first time, mostly because the process is different from buying other things online. The gun does not come to your door. It ships to a licensed dealer near you, and you complete the paperwork there. Here is the path from start to finish.

1. Choose your firearm and your dealer

Browse the firearms collection and pick a model. Then find a local FFL dealer who will receive it for you. Call ahead: dealers set their own transfer fees and policies, and some have rules about which items they will accept.

2. Check out and name your FFL

At checkout, you choose the receiving dealer. Your order ships to them, not to your home. Accessories that do not need an FFL, like most optics, can ship to your address.

3. Shipping

Firearms ship with live carrier rates. Our shipping policy explains the details, including state restrictions.

4. Pickup at your local dealer

When the dealer receives your firearm, they will contact you. You complete the federal paperwork and a background check in person, and bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Our guide on how FFL transfers work walks through this step in detail.

5. Inspect it

Check your firearm at the counter before you take it home. If anything looks wrong, tell the dealer and contact us right away. Our refund policy covers returns, and firearms and ammunition are generally non-returnable, so inspect on delivery.

Laws vary by state

Waiting periods, magazine limits and permit requirements differ by state. Check the rules where you live before you order. We are not a legal advisor, so if you are unsure, ask your dealer or a local attorney.
