How Do FFL Transfers Work in Kansas?
October 13, 2026Share
Short answer: When you buy a firearm online, it is shipped to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder near you, not to your home. You complete the federal paperwork and background check at that dealer, then take the firearm home.
The steps
- Choose your firearm and your FFL dealer. At checkout you select the FFL that will receive your order. Contact that dealer first to confirm they accept outside transfers and ask what they charge.
- We ship to your FFL. Your order goes to the dealer you selected. The dealer notifies you when it arrives.
- Complete ATF Form 4473 and a NICS check. At pickup you fill out Form 4473 and the dealer runs the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check.
- Show government-issued photo ID. Bring a valid government photo ID. The dealer may ask for additional documents.
- Take it home once the check is approved and the dealer completes the transfer.
What does the transfer cost?
Each receiving FFL sets its own transfer fee. We do not control it, so ask your dealer before you order.
Age requirements
Federal law generally requires buyers to be at least 18 for long guns and at least 21 for handguns purchased from a licensed dealer.
Kansas specifics
Kansas does not require a state purchase permit, registration of firearms or a waiting period for buying a firearm, so the federal process above is the main requirement. Laws change and local rules can apply, so confirm current requirements with your FFL dealer or the Kansas Attorney General's office.
